Ensure Drunkenness is the Problem
First of all, you do not want the employee to be hurt or sick while on the job. In some cases, some of the signs of intoxication can actually be caused by other things than drunkenness, such as if the employee had a bad reaction to his or her medication or if the employee has diabetes and is suffering from low glucose levels. You do not want to make the wrong assumption or see the employee go through a medical issue because he or she did not seek proper medical treatment.
If the employee trips and falls because of his or her intoxication, you do not want your company to be held responsible for any accidents. Not only do you have to worry about the employee getting hurt, but you also have to worry about other employees or customers being in harm’s way because of the employee’s intoxicated behavior. Have Documentation of the Incident
Depending on your company policy, you may want to have documentation of the incident so that you can take proper action.
